Knitting Factory Records releases the long-awaited vinyl reissue of Zombie. Classic!
Few albums have had much political impact as Fela Kuti's Zombie. A no holds barred critique of the Nigerian military and the mindless zombies patrolling the country, Fela called on the nation to join him in expressing their contempt. The album was a nationwide hit and instrumental in politicising the public but also created further tensions between Kuti and the government in the process. The army responded with an attack on Fela's commune, the Kalakuta Republic, beating him, throwing his 77-year-old mother out of a window and eventually setting fire to the compound. The blaze gutted the premises, destroying six Afrika 70 vehicles, all Fela’s master tapes and band equipment and a four-track recording studio.
