Growing up in London with jungle, grime and broken beats, the jazz approach of Yussef Dayes and Kamaal Williams (aka Henry Wu) is shaped by the bass sound of the pirate stations, similar to the way their US colleagues Robert Glasper and Kamasi Washington incorporate hip-hop into their music. Further inspirations on Yussef Kamaal’s debut album are the liberal Anything Goes spirit of the 1970’s jazz funk by Herbie Hancock or Mahavishnu Orchestra, while their piano playing is based on Thelonious Monk and their drum programming is based on Kaidi Tatham.
